Communications and Outreach Officer

CDM is seeking a new Communications and Outreach Officer

OVERVIEW

Canadian Doctors for Medicare is a physician-led organization advocating for the improvement of our public health care system. CDM is currently recruiting for the position of Communications and Outreach Officer. The successful candidate will support the organization’s mission through targeted communications efforts and outreach to a variety of audiences including medical professionals, the general public, and policy advisors. This is a permanent, full-time position.

DUTIES

Media Management
  • Plan and implement a media strategy to promote the agenda of CDM
  • Develop and circulate media materials including press releases, media advisories, articles and op eds and pursue publication and republication of materials
  • Develop, leverage and maintain relationships with key media contacts
  • Respond to media inquiries and manage responses by board member and spokespeople
  • Provide communications support and media training for board members
Content Creation 
  • Research, write, and edit a variety of communications and marketing materials including, but not limited to, newsletters, speeches, editorials, and reports
  • Proofread and edit copy written by others
  • Design, layout, and do prepress for communication and outreach materials
  • Create and implement style guides for issue-specific campaigns
  • Support fundraising and donor support initiatives with appropriate content development
Brand Development and Amplification
  • Monitor traditional and social media to identify health-related news issues in a timely fashion
  • Generate and engage online audiences using Mailchimp, Twitter, and Facebook
  • Develop , leverage and maintain relationships with contacts
  • Identify events and opportunities for CDM to engage with new and relevant audiences
Public Education and Outreach
  • Develop and execute communications plans for issue-based campaigns
  • Work with allied organizations on collaborative projects
  • Design and produce knowledge translation documents to support the release of CDM-supported research and policy initiatives on a variety of topics (e.g. activity-based funding, acute to community care, pharmacare)
  • Organize and staff CDM displays at a variety of events (public talks, medical conferences)
  • Develop and deliver educational materials to stakeholder audiences
  • Support government relations efforts
  • Develop outreach initiatives and cultivation of potential audiences
Organizational Development
  • Develop and maintain systems for improving organizational infrastructure
  • Support board communications committee
  • Liaise with board members around communications opportunities including editorial submissions and speaking opportunities
  • Provide writing and editing support as required
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • 3 years of experience working in communications and media, preferably in the nonprofit or government sectors
  • Proven experience in successfully developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and experience with, various social media and other online engagement platforms including Facebook and Twitter, including experience in designing materials for social media
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging communications and marketing materials
  • Ability to conduct basic research and translate research and policy into plain language communications
  • Superior accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team as well as independently; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and sustain mutually supportive relationships
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workloads in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in growing social media audiences and engaging online communities
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, schedule and perform complex tasks with minimum supervision
  •  Knowledge of Canada’s health care systems an asset
  • Experience in public policy/advocacy an asset
  • Knowledge and proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop an asset
  • Post-secondary qualifications in Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations or equivalent experience an asset
  • Experience in content management systems such as Joomla and WordPress an asset
  • Experience working with a board of directors an asset
  • Ability to speak/write in French an asset
