In 2009, Canadian Doctors for Medicare, in partnership with two peer-reviewed journals, Canadian Journal of Public Health and Canadian Family Physician, invited medical students and residents across Canada to submit a 1,500 word essay on their vision for a better Medicare system. The winner of the essay contest was Christian van der Pol, a student at the University of Toronto. Christian' essay, Improving Medicare, appears in the September 2010 edition of Canadian Family Physician, and is featured on the cover. Congratulations Christian!
The competition was an opportunity for emerging leaders in health care to put forward their ideas, and to meet leaders in the field at the annual meeting of the Canadian Medical Association, which was held in Niagara Falls this past August. Participants were asked to focus their essays on one specific aspect of the health care system or to take a broader approach.
